Since 1981, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto has served as a place to call home for families with seriously ill children undergoing treatment. RMHC Toronto encompasses a House for 81 families in downtown Toronto and seven Family Rooms in hospitals across the Greater Toronto Area and in Sudbury. The families we serve come from throughout Ontario, across Canada and around the world.

We are looking for a dynamic Senior Prospect Development & Research Officer to join our team at the House, located at 240 McCaul St., Toronto.  

The Role

In this role you will play a pivotal part in enhancing the organization's philanthropic efforts by providing value-added prospect research and extensive data analysis. This role reports to the Director of Development and works very closely across the Development & Marketing team. 

The incumbent will play a pivotal part in enhancing the organization's philanthropic strategy and efforts. The primary goal is to bolster our competitive edge in the philanthropic marketplace, facilitating the acquisition of major and transformative gifts. 

The Sr. Prospect Development and Research Officer will engage in both proactive and reactive prospect research and identification, conduct pipeline and relationship development activities, monitor relevant news and industry trends, and offer support for prospect and donor strategies. This role includes mining our existing Raiser’s Edge/NXT database to uncover opportunities to expand giving. Collaborating closely with fundraisers, this role is instrumental in achieving our fundraising goals and objectives and as well as securing vital support in service to our mission.

We are looking for an individual who is not only an experienced prospect research professional, but also possesses a deep passion for the health and wellbeing of families and children. The ideal candidate will demonstrate curiosity, accuracy, and ethical research practices, actively identifying new prospects and providing valuable advice and insights on potential donors. 

Hybrid in nature, this role works 2 days/week regularly in the office.

Key Responsibilities Include 

  • Provide business and data insights to inform fundraising and campaign planning
  • Participate in prospect review meetings, offering research and data insights to inform strategy
  • Conduct regular research and analysis on constituents including background, capacity, inclination and philanthropy to assess giving potential
  • Conduct data mining activities to identify new prospective donors and make recommendations for portfolio assignment, and prioritization of prospects
  • Leverage data from Raiser’s Edge/NXT and iWave (and other databases) to identify prospects for specific fundraising priorities, and engagement opportunities
  • Oversee and undertake periodic wealth screening of the database and develop an action plan for all new leads
  • Prepare concise prospect profiles and briefings for colleagues and leaders throughout RMHC Toronto
  • Maintain accurate and updated information in files, including prospect status and contact notes in Raiser’s Edge/NXT
  • Develop and maintain reports using business intelligence tools including Power BI and excel for pipeline analysis and to track key metrics
  • Collaborate with and advise two data analysts to support report development and accurate data management in Raiser’s Edge/NXT
  • Share and communicate best practices to the development of a moves management system to establish activity metrics
  • Monitor progress against prospect development activity goals, providing actionable insights to the Development Team
  • Monitor media sources, and maintain awareness and understanding of ethical issues and trends in the field of research and development to ensure proactive management of potential reputational risks for RMHC Toronto

QUALIFICATIONS

RMHC Toronto understands that for any role, it’s possible that no one person will possess all of the desired qualifications. The following is an outline of the qualifications we believe are important to bring to the position and/or develop while in the role. 

Education & Experience

  • Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree
  • Five years of experience in a not-for-profit organization, with a specific focus on prospect research and pipeline development and management 
  • An equivalent combination of education, skills and experience will be considered 

  • Membership in APRA Canada (formerly Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement) or willingness to become a member is required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Comprehensive understanding and experience in prospect research using various online information sources and databases
  • Understanding of the Canadian business landscape, financials, and corporate annual reports
  • Practical experience in effectively reviewing data and identifying data inconsistencies for accuracy in data and reporting
  • Superior computer and data analysis skills, preferably in using Raiser’s Edge/ NXT
  • Proficiency in using MS office, including advanced Excel
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, demonstrating attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to evaluate, interpret, and present complex information effectively in professionally prepared documents or presentations
  • Experience working with iWave, CharityCAN, Grant Connect, SEDAR and other databases
  • Excellent professional communication skills and the ability to be clear and concise orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute a full project plan and the ability to manage several projects simultaneously
  • Exemplary organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize and plan work activities, while meeting respective deadlines.
  • Practical understanding of privacy and access to information legislation
  • Tact in handling sensitive and confidential information appropriately and with discretion, following and promoting ethical guidelines for the collection and use of information
